What We Do

Supporting and challenging young people to become the best they can be

Whether you are looking to increase grades, learn new skills, begin on the journey to employment, receive support and encouragement, or simply engage in fun activities alongside other teens, you’ve reached the right place.

At Teen Action we have something for everyone.

Using a holistic approach in delivery, we support young women to R.E.A.C.H higher through programs which deliver on our core themes of Recreation, Education, Arts, Career Guidance and Health & Wellbeing.

Recreation

Recreation is the ideal way to support the emotional and social well-being of young people. Through recreation people have new experiences, engage more fully in living, and develop healthy lifestyles.

We deliver bi-annual Break-Away weekend retreats to give inner-city young women a chance to explore the outdoors, connect with others, and practice independence.

”First-hand reports from the young people tell me that they benefit from a wide range of projects and training programmes and gain skills that equip them for employment and for life.”

“Champion Club was my second chance at getting a pass on my maths GCSE, and even though I didn’t pass, I was still supported through my Functional Skills exam which has opened more opportunities for me.”

Education

A well-rounded education is essential when moving on in life and accessing employment.   Education informs our learning, knowledge and skill and is the base from which we can progress.

This is a central focus of our work, upskilling young women and providing them with quality training and support.  This encompasses core GCSE support through our Champion Club provisions, beginner and advanced (accredited) IT training for digitally excluded young people, a post-18 Gateways study program to boost subject-specific accreditations towards employment, and a fully-developed Independent Living program.

Arts

Beyond formal education, there are a wealth of skills and vocational crafts which develop creativity, fine hand skills, confidence and alternative avenues to employment.

At the centre of our work, we provide many short creative art/craft courses throughout the year that allow young people to explore different skills sets.  Programs include pyrography, floristry, confectionery, hair styling, choral ensemble and computer graphics. Taster sessions are delivered at our annual summer Creative Break scheme for high school girls, led by our young people.

Gift the arts

“It did my daughter a world of good – she made great friends and was super proud of her work of art… I’m so happy she was given a chance to excel in an area where her talents lie.”

“I would totally recommend ‘Get a Job’ to my friends as it’s a vital program before anyone starts working!”

Career Guidance

Perhaps the biggest milestone a young person faces is the transition from education to employment.  Some are fortunate to have a well charted path and many accessible job opportunities, whilst others struggle to secure employment with the prospect of unemployment looming.

We put a big emphasis on supporting young women to develop the skills towards employment and guide them along the route so that they may become an integral part of the nation’s workforce. Provisions include our Get a Job employment introduction workshop series, 1:1 career guidance sessions, soft skills development program and job placements.

Health & Wellbeing

physical and mental health is of paramount importance and the foundations upon which we can grow and reach higher.

We support a healthy lifestyle and sports through exercise sessions. We also put a strong focus on building young people’s wellbeing and positive mental health through our Innate Health program, individual counselling/psychotherapy, complementary and alternative therapies training program and social talk-shop sessions.

“I really look forward to Mrs Bard’s [Innate Health] sessions.  I find it really changes the way I think about life and myself, and  empowers me.”
