Off we go!

This winter, 68 inner-city young women stepped away from the pressures of everyday life and into something truly special—a three-day Break-Away retreat filled with energy, connection, and growth.

Set against the peaceful backdrop of Lincolnsfields in Bushey, the retreat offered more than just a change of scenery. It was a space created by young women, for young women—where leadership wasn’t taught from the front, but lived and experienced in every moment.

From the very beginning, this was a youth-led experience. Participants shaped the destination, designed the itinerary, and took ownership of key aspects of the weekend—from planning meals and organising activities to leading social workshops and creating the atmosphere itself. The result was something deeply meaningful: a programme that truly reflected their ideas, creativity, and strengths.

As Malky, age 17 shared:
“This was the first time in my life I worked with a group of like-minded girls to pull something so big off! I really can’t believe it.”

Throughout the weekend, the energy was palpable. Days were filled with movement, laughter, and shared experiences—whether dancing together, taking in the beauty of nature on scenic walks, or collaborating on group activities. Even the smallest details carried meaning, like the Saturday night “build-your-own” dinner, where the theme of “fill your role (roll)” became a powerful reminder that each young woman has a unique contribution to make.

But beyond the fun, something deeper was taking place.

Young women stepped into leadership roles with confidence—delegating tasks, supporting one another, and working as a team to bring the weekend to life. In doing so, they developed essential skills that will stay with them far beyond the retreat: teamwork, responsibility, organisation, and self-belief.

My brain just feels like it unloaded all my stress and tension.” – Chana, age 16

The impact was both immediate and lasting. Participants reported significant increases in happiness and noticeable reductions in stress, with many describing a sense of mental clarity and emotional release. Time spent in nature, away from daily pressures, allowed them to reset, reflect, and return with renewed energy and focus.

Equally powerful were the connections formed. Through shared experiences, group discussions, and informal moments, friendships deepened and new bonds were created. The sense of unity and belonging was evident throughout—a reminder that when young women are given the space to lead and support one another, something truly transformative happens.

As one young woman beautifully put it:
“It’s been a long time since I was able to just let go and enjoy time well-spent on building skill and making new friends.”

By the end of the weekend, participants left not only refreshed, but empowered—equipped with new skills, stronger relationships, and a deeper belief in their own potential.

This is what Break-Away is all about: creating opportunities for young women to lead, to grow, and to realise just how much they are capable of.
